How did life begin on Earth?
Over the last century, scientists have tried to figure out the answer to this question.
In the 1950s, Stanley Miller, an undergraduate student and his supervisor Harold Urey, designed a device to mimic the conditions in the atmosphere in its beginning. They used electric pulses to simulate the impact of lightning on a mixture of water and gases. They discovered that the sparks caused the synthesis of organic molecules, the building blocks of life.
We know that life began at least 3.5 billion years ago, however, scientists are still trying to determine the origin of life. Where did it all begin? And how? As a group, you are going to start an investigation to answer some questions about this mystery.
