To identify groups of living things scientist often use a dichotomous key.
There are different types of dichotomous keys. They can be a list of questions or a list of descriptions organised in pairs. The descriptions can be characteristics of an organism.
To identify the organism we have to follow a process of choosing from options. When we choose one of the options, then two more choices are presented. The process is repeated until there are no more choices to be made and we have identified the organism.
