      STEM competences

Mathematical competence is the ability to develop and apply mathematical thinking and insight to solve problems in everyday situations.

Competence in science refers to the ability and willingness to explain the natural world by making use of scientific concepts, theories and methods, and to draw evidence-based conclusions.

Competences in technology and engineering are applications of mathematical and scientific knowledge to find solutions to human wants and needs.

These competences involve an understanding of the changes caused by human activity and responsibility as individual citizens.

      Cultural awareness and expression

Competence in cultural awareness and expression involves understanding and respecting the importance of diversity and how ideas and meaning are creatively expressed and communicated in different cultures through a range of arts and other cultural forms.

One of the most famous sketches made by Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) is the “Vitruvian Man”. It shows the correlations of ideal human body proportions with geometry and mathematics. For example, the elbow to the armpit is one eighth of the man’s height.

      Research and discuss

Why is it called the "Vitruvian Man"? What is special about this diagram? Why is there one body within a circle and another one within a square?

Where did DaVinci live? Did his community appreciate his work?
