      The origin of the continents

In 1912, Albert Wegener presented his continental drift theory. He was the first person to explain the origin of the continents.

Today, scientists believe that about 200 million years ago there was a single landmass on the Earth. This supercontinent was surrounded by an ocean, Panthalasa.

Could Wegener have known about plate tectonics? How did he know that continents shift position on Earth's surface? What is the name of the supercontinent that began to break apart about 200 million years ago? Have there been other supercontinents?

Uncover Alfred Wegner's theory of continental drift
